Patriot Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya

Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya was one of the most respected leaders of India’s freedom movement, known for his contributions as a scholar, educationist, social reformer, and nationalist. He was born on ecember 25, 1861, in Allahabad into a Brahmin family known for its scholarly traditions. He received early education in Sanskrit schools before moving to an English medium school and later studying at Muir Central College. Though he began his career as an assistant master at a government high school, his passion for public service led him to join the Indian National Congress, where his first speech at the Calcutta session left a deep impression. He went on to become Congress President three times—1909, 1918, and 1933—though he was arrested before he could preside over the 1933 session.

Malviya believed deeply in the power of education and considered it the foundation of national progress. His most lasting legacy is the establishment of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), which Mahatma Gandhi regarded as his greatest contribution. He also made significant contributions to journalism by editing Hindustan and Indian Union, founding the English daily Leader in Allahabad, and launching the Hindi weekly Abhyudaya.

A strong advocate of social reform, he worked for the upliftment of the underprivileged and the removal of untouchability. In 1933, he presided over the founding meeting of the Harijan Sevak Sangh. Though a devout Hindu, he championed religious tolerance and equal rights for all communities, stating that true faith must never allow discrimination.

Malviya also served on the Indian Legislative Council and strongly condemned the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. His tireless efforts earned him the admiration of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. He passed away in 1946, but his ideals and achievements continue to inspire generations of Indians. On December 25, 1961, the nation observed the centenary of birth of this great patriot. He left an   indelible mark in the realm of  higher education in India to prepare the  young students for nation building, integration and progress in life.
