History of Shinde Chhatri

Shinde Chhatri has a fascinating history rooted in both personal devotion and family legacy. Originally, Mahadji Shinde constructed the temple of Lord Shiva at this site during his lifetime. The temple, dedicated to his personal faith, was the only structure on the grounds until his death in 1794, when his cremation took place beside it.

In 1965, the descendants of Mahadji Shinde, particularly Madhavrao Scindia, built the memorial in his honor, adjacent to the temple where his last rites were performed. The entire complex is maintained by the Shinde Devasthan Trust, which is operated by the Scindia family from Gwalior. Today, the site stands as a prominent piece of Pune’s cultural and historical heritage.

The architecture of Shinde Chhatri is an extraordinary blend of Anglo-Rajasthani styles. Built with yellow sandstone, the structure is supported by ornately carved pillars and walls adorned with intricate details. One of the most distinctive features is the presence of rock idols along the roof, adding a unique charm to the memorial.

The interiors of the Chhatri are equally impressive, with vibrant shades of orange and green filling the walls. Beautiful chandeliers hang from the ceiling, while stained-glass windows and a spiral staircase enhance the regal atmosphere. The floor of the Chhatri is designed in simple black-and-white geometric patterns, offering a striking contrast to the richly decorated walls.

Adjacent to the memorial, the Shiva temple showcases an elaborate Rajasthani temple style. The sanctum (garbhagriha) is built from black stone, while the temple spire, adorned with a kalash, rises high above. Numerous smaller spires, each crowned with its own kalash, surround the temple, creating a majestic silhouette.
