The Union Territory of Daman and Diu was once a  colony held by the Portuguese rulers for a long period even after India got independence, Daman and Diu became a part of the erstwhile Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu in 1961. When Goa attained the statehood in 1987, Daman and Diu became a separate Union Territory. Diu is at the
southern border of the state of Gujarat, off the Saurashtra coast bordering Junagadh district.

Diu is a town in Diu district and  Diu District is the tenth least populated district of India. It is a fishing town.  In 1535 Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat, made a defensive alliance with the Portuguese against the Mughal emperor Humayun and allowed the Portuguese to construct the Diu Fort and maintain a garrison on the island. Not happy with the Portuguese, Bahadur Shaw made a futilr attempt to recover the island from the Portuguse and ultimately he was killed by the colonists. Because of a couple of sieges by Ottoman and other forces, Diu was fortified and the town later lost it importance with the development of Bombay.  The fortress was completed under João de Castro after the siege of 1545. From 1535 until 1961Portual controlled it and, at last Union government took it over and other possessins through military action.

From tourism point of vie it is an interesting place replete with many historical monuments, forts, etc.,  that carry the  erstwhile Portuguese colonial legacy. These monuments   and  structures  were built in typical  Portuguese style. Of particular interest to us is  the Zampa Gateway in Diu, a place most visited by the visitors to this place. What is so special about this place? Why do people come here in large numbers?  Because it is a majestic and unique monument, an exotic one.
