Sher Mandal , 16th century monument within Purana Quila, Delhi- simple, but grandeur in style!!

Occupying the highest point Sher Mandal is located on the east of a hamam (Turkish royal bath) towards the southeastern end of Purana Qila, one of the oldest forts in Delhi built by the second Mughal Emperor Humayun.

Sher Mandal isa  simple but impressive  Mogul monument, a fine example of  Mughal Architecture built in Char Bagh style. This kind of style is incorporated from the  Persian Architecture for the first time by the Moguls in India  The char Bagh was considered to represent the four gardens of Paradise mentioned in the Quran's 55th Chapter (Surah). In this layout  the main building is at the center of a quadrilateral garden, divided by walkways or flowing water into four smaller parts. the advantages of this style are it creates a quiet ambiance and the garden and water ways around the building keep the occupants cool inside, well suited for tropical climate. The tomb of Humayun is the first garden tomb in India and later Mogul rulers followed this style with some innovations.    .

Sher Mandal constructed in the 16th-century within the Purana Qila fort of Delhi is the only  part of the surviving palace structure within the fort . Lots of tourists visit this old structure on account of its  simplicity and grandeur appearance. Also called Sher Shah's pavilion, the design carries the elements oTimurid (Timurid dynasty 14th to 16th CE)) and Safavid (Iranian Safavid dynasty of 16th to 18th CE)  architecture.

The builder of Sher Shah Mandal is a subject of dispute. It is said it was built by Sher Shah Suri (1472, or 1486 – 1545) often called the "Just King" (Sultan Adil) and the founder of the Sur Empire in India. He was defeated the by the Mughal ruler in 1540. other historians say the homogenous design style of many structures are consistent with later ruler Humayun's style. The nearby Humayun tomb is an interesting monument, a UNESCO recognized site in Delhi. The other sites are the  Shrine of Nizamuddin Auliya, revered Sufi saint  and his tomb..
