A Historic Legacy: The George Everest House and Cartography Museum
The George Everest House, now home to the newly inaugurated George Everest Cartography Museum, is a historical landmark in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. Situated 6 km from Gandhi Chowk, the estate offers panoramic views of the Doon Valley and the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Known as Park Estate, it served as the residence and laboratory of Sir George Everest, the Surveyor-General of India from 1830 to 1843. Everest played a pivotal role in measuring the height of the world’s tallest peak, which was later named in his honor.
Reviving Heritage: The George Everest Cartography Museum
After recent renovations funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and overseen by the Uttarakhand Tourism Department, the George Everest House was transformed into India’s first dedicated cartography museum. Inaugurated by Uttarakhand’s Minister of Tourism and Culture, Satpal Maharaj, on World Tourism Day in September 2023, the museum commemorates the work of Sir George Everest and two pioneering Indian explorers, Radhanath Sikdar and Pt. Nain Singh Rawat. The museum showcases the Great Trigonometric Arc Survey led by Everest, which mapped the vast Indian subcontinent.

Honoring Radhanath Sikdar: Naming the Helipad
As a tribute to the contributions of Indian mathematician Radhanath Sikdar—who first calculated the height of Mount Everest—a helipad at the estate has been named in his honor. Sikdar’s groundbreaking work was critical to the accuracy of early Himalayan surveys, establishing a legacy that has influenced modern cartography and mountaineering.
An Educational Experience
The museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of cartography and surveying. Visitors can explore detailed maps of the Himalayas, learn about the instruments used in early surveys, and view rare survey records. The thoughtfully curated exhibits shed light on the methods employed by Everest and his team, making the museum a valuable educational resource.
Promoting Tourism and Community Participation
The museum’s inauguration is part of a broader initiative by the Uttarakhand government to enhance the region’s tourism appeal. During the ceremony, Sarmoli village in Pithoragarh was awarded the Best Tourist Village award for its efforts in sustainable tourism and community engagement, reflecting the state’s commitment to promoting local culture alongside its heritage sites.
