Banaras Hindu University (BHU), founded in 1916 by Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, is one of India’s premier Central Universities and Asia’s largest residential university. Established with guidance from national leaders like Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Surendra Nath Banerjee, BHU was envisioned as a national institution open to all, regardless of caste, creed, or gender.

Located on the western bank of the Ganga River in Varanasi, the main campus covers 15 square kilometers and includes 16 Faculties, 5 Institutes, 134 teaching departments, 2 interdisciplinary schools, and 12 Centers of Studies. The university also has a constituent college, 3 schools, and the Ranveer Sanskrit Pathshala for primary to secondary education.

BHU integrates traditional Indian education with modern disciplines such as arts, sciences, engineering, Ayurveda, medicine, and agriculture. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-BHU), formerly part of the university, is located within its campus. The Rajiv Gandhi South Campus in Mirzapur, established in 2006, spans 2700 acres.

The campus features include a 1000-bedded hospital, India’s largest trauma and super specialty center, central library with over a million books, Bharat Kala Bhawan museum, hostels, sports complexes, Vishwanath Temple, and its own airfield and helipad. It also has NCC wings, NSS, employment bureaus, training and placement centers, and modern communication and infrastructure facilities.
Over its century-long legacy, BHU has produced distinguished alumni including Prime Ministers, Vice Presidents, Chief Justices, Bharat Ratna awardees, and pioneers in various fields. BHU celebrated its centenary on Vasant Panchami, 12th February 2016, marking 100 years as India’s enduring Capital of Knowledge.
