SKCG College in Paralakhemundi in South Odisha  that enjoys an autonomous status now is the third oldest college in the state. The Revenshaw College of Cuttack is older than this one. yet another pretty old institution is  the Sanskrit college that is affiliated to Puri Sanskrit University.  The history of  SKCG college is an interesting one  and it grew out of a primary grade school started in 1857, surprisingly in the year the Great rebellion (of 1857) started off at Meerut Cantonment, M.P. The court of wards gave a monthly grant for its upkeep on behalf of the ruler of  Paralakhemundi,  In 1874 it became a middle school and later in 1884 high school. Located in a hilly terrain, Paralakhemundi  is on the banks of Mahendratanaya river and is sharing borders with  the town called Pathapatnam of Andhra Pradesh.

The college owes its origin to the early rulers of this part of Odisha whose dedication and commitments to impart and spread of education to all sections of the society made it possible. It was in 1896 this institution was founded. Thanks to the munificence and patronage of the Raja of Paralakhemundi "Shri Shri Shri Goura Chandra Gajapati Narayana Deo". In the same year it got the affiliation from Madras university as  a second grade college. It became a first grade college in 1936 through the efforts of Maharaja Sri Krishna Chandra Gajapati Narayana Deo. Now the affiliation was with Andhra university.  Kolahomee, one of the sons of Gajapati Kapilendra Dev, the Gajapati monarch in the later half of the 15th Century came to this part of Paralakhemundi (then in Ganjam district) and founded the Royal family of Paralakhemundi.

A new  institution  called  Utkal University came into being in November 1943 and SKCG  College college was one among the five colleges that got the affiliation from the new university.  In July 1947, the management  was taken over by the State government and was named after its foster father and patron Sri Krushna Chandra Gajapati.  Towards the end of 1948, the college was shifted from its old building to the Morrison Extension (named after Mr .Cameran Morrison, Tutor of the Maharajah, in which it is housed today. The college  celebrated its centenary from 10 to 12 January 2001.
Subsequently,  in 1980 PG degree courses were offered. On 2 January 1967 Berhampur University came into existence and since then the college  had been affiliated to it. This old college fulfilled the  long cherished demand of the students and the public of the region, imparting quality education to all sections of people to prepare them to take the society forward in the near future. In the later years the college followed the curriculum in conjunction  with those prescribed by the Berhampur University. However, being an autonomous college it, now    carefully  follows  its own methods of admission, evaluation and conduct of examinations to prepare the students for tomorrows leadership and advances in science and technology. In conformity with the changing world and the importance of practical knowledge, students’ performance is evaluated both internally and externally.  The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India in September  gave recognition in 2004 and the college was   accredited with B Grade. The College now, has its own Boards of Studies in all subjects and an Academic Council  that frequently discuss the progress of the college and the performance of students  and offer them proper guidance  as part of the objectives of Autonomy.

The college offers many arts and science subjects at under graduate and PG levels, besides teaching other Indian languages like Sanskrit, the local language Oriya and Telugu. The college has good good infrastructure facilities like numerous  spacious class rooms as many as 45,  several galleries, halls and a big play ground for the students  to engage in physical activities in the evening. There  are indoor sporting facilities as well here.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S._K._C._G._Autonomous_College,_Paralakhemundi
