The college owes its origin to the early rulers of this part of Odisha whose dedication and commitments to impart and spread of education to all sections of the society made it possible. It was in 1896 this institution was founded. Thanks to the munificence and patronage of the Raja of Paralakhemundi "Shri Shri Shri Goura Chandra Gajapati Narayana Deo". In the same year it got the affiliation from Madras university as a second grade college. It became a first grade college in 1936 through the efforts of Maharaja Sri Krishna Chandra Gajapati Narayana Deo. Now the affiliation was with Andhra university. Kolahomee, one of the sons of Gajapati Kapilendra Dev, the Gajapati monarch in the later half of the 15th Century came to this part of Paralakhemundi (then in Ganjam district) and founded the Royal family of Paralakhemundi.

Subsequently, in 1980 PG degree courses were offered. On 2 January 1967 Berhampur University came into existence and since then the college had been affiliated to it. This old college fulfilled the long cherished demand of the students and the public of the region, imparting quality education to all sections of people to prepare them to take the society forward in the near future. In the later years the college followed the curriculum in conjunction with those prescribed by the Berhampur University. However, being an autonomous college it, now carefully follows its own methods of admission, evaluation and conduct of examinations to prepare the students for tomorrows leadership and advances in science and technology. In conformity with the changing world and the importance of practical knowledge, students’ performance is evaluated both internally and externally. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India in September gave recognition in 2004 and the college was accredited with B Grade. The College now, has its own Boards of Studies in all subjects and an Academic Council that frequently discuss the progress of the college and the performance of students and offer them proper guidance as part of the objectives of Autonomy.
The college offers many arts and science subjects at under graduate and PG levels, besides teaching other Indian languages like Sanskrit, the local language Oriya and Telugu. The college has good good infrastructure facilities like numerous spacious class rooms as many as 45, several galleries, halls and a big play ground for the students to engage in physical activities in the evening.
