The legend has it the ruler of this place Thampuran of Paravur, being an ardent devotee of Goddess Mookambika. never failed to make his annual pilgrimage to the Kollur temple near Mangalore, now in Karnataka. Having become frail and old, he found it difficult to make his annual visit to the Kollur temple. Crest-fallen, he stoically regretted his helplessness. The goddess, being compassionate as she was, appeared in a dream and advised him to have a temple built and consecrated her idol near his palace. This would help him have daily darshan of her. Accordingly, Thampuran had a temple built at Paravur and installed the Goddess as per temple Sastras.
Among the Hindu festivals, here the nine-day Navaratri festival is held on a grand scale with passion and piety.
