Located on an island formed by the Betwa River, the temple stands just south of the Ram Raja Temple. Orchha is accessible by road from the Jhansi-Khajuraho highway and by rail from Jhansi, 16 kilometers away. It is also reachable by air via Gwalior Airport. Construction of the temple began under Madhukar Shah of the Bundela Rajput dynasty during Emperor Akbar’s reign and was completed by his son Vir Singh Deo in the 16th century. According to local legend, Queen Ganeshkuwari, a devotee of Lord Rama, had a divine dream commanding her to build a temple. She brought an image of Lord Rama from Ayodhya, placing it temporarily in her palace since the temple was incomplete. However, the idol could not be moved once installed, so the palace became the Ram Raja Temple, the only place where Rama is worshipped as a king. The temple’s design resembles the four arms of Vishnu and is built on a 15-foot high platform. It features tall, pine cone-shaped spires, a massive entrance, and arcaded openings. Its mandapa is cruciform in design, showing Māru-Gurjara influence.
