Savadatti Fort, also known as Saundatti Fort, is an 18th-century military structure located in the western part of Savadatti town in Karnataka's Belgaum district. This town, once known by various names like Sughandavarti and Savandavatti—meaning "fragrant city"—was historically ruled by the Ratta dynasty between the 9th and 13th centuries before they shifted their capital to Belgaum. The fort was constructed in 1734 after the Savanur Nawab gifted Savadatti and Dharwar village to the Naralgund Desai. Another account credits Jayappa Desai of the Navalgund-Sirasangi Sansthan with building the fort between 1743 and 1751. During Hyder Ali’s expansion, the Desais allied with him.

Built atop a stand-alone rocky hill, the fort takes the shape of a nine-sided polygon and is constructed with large, hewn stones. It has superb fortified  defensive  features with  eight massive bastions, a surrounding moat, and an east-facing main gate, which is reached by a steep road and further accessed via a staircase of around 30 steps. The walls vary in height from 24 to 60 feet, with each side approximately 120 feet long. Narrow parapets with loopholes and revetments reinforce the ramparts, and posterns on both sides of the main gate provided additional defense.

Inside the fort is a smaller, square-shaped inner fort, protected by corner bastions and a moat, and accessed through a well-built entrance and stone-pillar ramparts. A Hanuman temple now sits at a higher point inside the main fort, beneath which a beacon light has been installed. The inner fort houses a large pond and the Kadisiddeshwara Temple, the spiritual heart of the structure. The temple's prakara displays over 200 ornamental carvings in geometric patterns, some still retaining traces of paint, reflecting the fort's blend of military function and cultural artistry.
