What is special about the idol enshrined in the sanctum is  the nature of the stone with which the idol is made. It absorbs the oil applied on the it. The idol, in meditative posture, faces East. There are no traces of oil on the idol after Abhishekam' or the holy bathing  is performed in the morning by the priest. No chemical or herbal powder is used to remove the oil left on the idol.

The idol has four hands each carrying a weapon. The upper right hand has the 'Chakra' (mystical disk) and the upper left hand  the 'Shankha' (conch) and the lower right and left hands are in a 'tapo mudra' posture. Yet another point worth mentioning is there are no  'Navagraha' prathishta here. The final Sundays of Malayalam months 'Vrishchikam' (October and November) and 'Medam' (May and June) are considered to be the most auspicious days to conduct special prayer, etc.  Shaivites and Vaishnavas often regard Surya as an aspect of Shiva and Vishnu respectively. For example, the sun is called Surya Narayana by Vaishnavas. In Shaivite theology, Surya is said to be one of eight forms of Shiva, named the Ashtamurti.  Surya is, the ruler of the worlds and is greeted by gods and demons. He brings in light and dispels darkness all through the year and plays a role in the sustenance of the life on earth.

Legend has it the surya idol  was consecrated in the temple by a  Nambudiri Brahmin, belonging to  the 'Kapikkadu Marangattu Mana 'as instructed by the sun god  'Adithya' himself who was pleased with his dedication and devotion; this  is not substantiated by temple records. However,  regular pujas and rituals  are done by the  descendants of that Nambudiri family for centuries  who have the tantric rights of the temple.

People who have eye and skin diseases, visit this temple  and perform  Aditya Pooja to get a cure.  Special rituals held on festival days include 'a  member from the Marangattu Illam must participate in the Kavadi ritual.

The Gayatri Mantra   and the Aditya Hrudayam,  associated with Surya.  are really powerful and their regular recitation will  help one  gain  success in your life by crossing the impediments on the path,
